LOCATION: Solon, OH (Greater Cleveland Area) preferred, or within close driving distance to a Nestle USA Factory or near a major US aiport

TRAVEL: Anticipate up to 50%. ( Ongoing Travel will be required for different projects)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Safety, Health, Environmental and Sustainability (SHE&S) Expert provides functional leadership across Nestle for the Capital Program. This role is responsible for design and functional oversight of the SHE&S aspects of the Capital Program and associated projects. This SHE&S functional leadership position includes establishing and implementing programs to assure adherence to Nestle SHE&S standards, setting project portfolio SHE&S targets, identifying, and implementing SHE&S Best Practices, for all projects, and developing and coaching project professionals working on capital projects. While project sponsors and project managers are accountable for the SHE&S performance, the SHE&S Expert provides the technical expertise and support to ensure compliance to Nestlé requirements. Including contractor assessments and support for required audits and inspections that are conducted to ensure that all operations are following Nestlé and regulatory requirements. This role is accountable for achieving continuous improvement and business objectives such as reductions in safety incidents, environmental impacts and implementation of sustainability objectives. The Capital Project SHE&S Lead works in close partnership with the Corporate Head of SH&E and network, including on the application in capital projects of process safety principles and practices, for which the Corporate SHE&S team remains the center of expertise in Nestlé.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Construction Safety

• Actively lead and promote a positive safety culture in all Nestle projects; demonstrate Nestle commitment to safety personally in interactions with Nestle staff, contractor and sub-contractor management staff, field supervisors, and construction labor

• Develop, maintain, and communicate Nestle construction safety policy, including requirements and guidelines on construction safety Best Practices that should be implemented on Nestle capital projects

• Coach the project team on gate deliverables and expectations for construction safety for each stage gate,

• In consultation with the Central Project Contracting and Procurement Lead, develop and maintain standard contractor construction safety program requirements to be included in Nestle project tender requests and execution contracts,

• Support Project SHE&S Managers and Contracting & Procurement Managers in safety prequalification of contractors, assessment and negotiation of contractor safety programs, and establishment of positive and open safety working relationships between Nestle project teams and contractor teams,

• Develop and oversee measurement and reporting of standard safety key leading indicators (KLIs) and key performance indicators (KPIs) for all capital project activity, ensuring these are coherent with measures of overall Nestle operations safety performance,

• Oversee investigations into safety incidents on Nestle capital projects and ensure lessons are learned and communicated within Nestle,

• Oversee and help lead targeted construction safety improvement initiatives with the site safety resources in response to identified weaknesses in safety practices, near misses, or incidents across sites

Design for Safety

• Maintain requirements and guidelines for the integration of process safety reviews and other safety-focused design reviews in the Nestle project framework, and ensure these are followed by Nestle project teams,

• Lead safe-by-design initiatives and ensure safe-by-design principles are followed throughout Nestle project design development,

• Ensure constructability reviews with an explicit safety focus are conducted in the FEL 2 and FEL 3 stages of every Nestle project, and repeated in Implement as necessary.

Regulatory Compliance

• Provide Environmental Engineering consulting services to business units and plants, advising operating staffs, project teams, and engineering groups on regulatory and technical issues.

• Assess capital projects to determine their environmental needs and provide necessary follow-up support including permitting, regulatory negotiations and conceptual design of environmental elements.

• Assist facilities as needed with preparation of various routine regulatory submittals including emission inventories, pollution prevention and control plans, right-to-know reporting, discharge monitoring reports, etc.

• Maintain an overview of external regulatory constraints and processes that apply to Nestle capital projects, including through building relationships with key external regulatory bodies in the primary jurisdictions in which Nestle operates and through engagement with Nestle regulatory experts in the operating businesses,

• Maintain and communicate Nestle guidelines for the preparation and execution of project permitting and regulatory compliance plans,

• Provide leadership for the regulatory assessment, establishment of compliance programs and the application of all required regulatory authorizations and permits.

• Provide input on regulatory constraints and risks to projects in the FEL 1 stage, working with the Major Projects Initiation & Development Lead, Business Engineering Directors, and Business Capex Leads.

• Oversee safety compliance for the NUSA Engineering function

Sustainability

• Maintain requirements and guidelines for the integration of sustainability considerations in the Nestle project framework and ensure these are followed by Nestle project teams.

Project SHE&S Resource Development

• Coach Nestle project SHE&S professionals and oversee their career development, ensuring there are viable and attractive career paths for Nestle staff into, within, and beyond the project SHE&S function

• Participate in recruitment of project SHE&S staff, and in assignment of Project SHE&S Managers to Nestle projects

• Provide input to project SHE&S staff performance assessments and development plans

• Oversee the provision of training for project SHE&S staff, ensuring it supports the desired project SHE&S culture, policies, and practices in Nestle

• Host a NUSA community of practice for Nestlé project SHE&S professionals to exchange experiences and provide mutual support

Assurance

• Support project assurance through independent review of SHE&S deliverables and inclusion of SHE&S issues more broadly in all project definition and planning deliverables

• Endorse project readiness for submission for gate approval

REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL:

• Bachelors Degree in Safety, Environmental, Engineering or related Field.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 7 years minimum Safety and Environmental experience in a manufacturing or consulting environment, specific to regulatory compliance for air, water, wastewater, solid waste, hazardous waste, or related discipline.

  • Field / Factory experience coordinating / supporting field work

  • Experience working in a multi-discipline team

  • Experience in managing/leading a multi-discipline team

The approximate pay range for this position is $99,170 to $140,000. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Final compensation may vary based on factors including but not limited to knowledge, skills and abilities as well as geographic location.
